One of my favorite activities is hitting a thrift store, and coming home with a wardrobe for $30. I’m lucky that there are some amazing thrift stores near my home, where I frequently get great bargains. I’ve bought clothes, furniture, knick knacks, wall art. Just about anything can be found at a thrift store.
For those of you who’ve never thrifted before, this will be an eye-opening experience. Below a listing of some great Thrift stores in the NYC and LI area. This list is by no means comprehensive, so please feel free to comment with your favorites.
NYC
Goodwill: Goodwill has multiple locations throughout the five boroughs and NY metro area. There are three city Locations I love; Chelsea, 79th street and 181st street. They have amazing clothes and furniture for prices you would not believe. You can also bid on Goodwill items from around the country at www.shopgoodwill.com For locations and more information
Salvation Army: Salvation Army is famous for ringing their bell’s on street corners starting this time of year, but they can also be a great place to score a bargain. Check out their website for more information and locations.
Cancer Care Thrift Shop: With Breast Cancer awareness month having just passed, why not get some fabulous clothes and support kicking cancer while you’re at it. CancerCare provides all sorts of free services for those battling all types of cancer and for their families. To check out their their thrift shop
City Opera Thrift Shop: If you feel like supporting the arts, hit the city opera thrift shop, where proceeds go towards the design and creation of costumes for The NYC Opera. NYC Opera was founded to make Opera reachable to the masses.
Council Thrift Shop: The National Council for Jewish Women’s Thrift shop is known for it’s great selection of clothes, shoes, and housewares/furniture. The proceeds help feed the hungry and you get to put your feet in $10 Stuart Weitzman shoes.
Housing Works: This is the go to place for great furniture and also high end designer labels. Shopping online is not the best bet as everything works on Auction and you probably won’t get the best prices.
Screaming Mimi’s: An icon in the vintage/thrift genre, Screaming Mimi’s is famous for it’s well tended vintage from the 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s. Check it out and try on the quirky vintage merchandise, and maybe take home a cute pair of kitten heels, or a ladylike frame bag.
After you hit these stores, thrifting might just become you’re next addictive shopping habit.
Happy (bargain) hunting!
